Forth Annual Global Playback Event in Taiwan

Forth Annual Global Playback Event in Taiwan

We have three playback companies participated the festival of issue of Human Rights in Taiwan this year, in which respectively we used three different styles to proceed. Know Playback Theatre held the playback performance focused on the human right. YOURS Playback Theatre, which is based in Hsin-Chu, had a workshop and forum discussing about this topic. As for Playback999, accordingly gave the audience an experiencing activity of playback before the performance in Hua-Lien. Before the festival, Knowing Playback Theatre had held 2 workshops about how to process the social issue, the members are fundamentally composed by these team members. The purpose of which converged on facing the social issue of the story and the relationship between the individual and the environment we live in.

After the festival, three playback companies shared and discussed the experience and inspiration from these performances by recording. .

The content of general performances list as below:

1. Knowing Playback Theatre (Yu-Chen Kao wrote)

In 7th December, in the morning of a Saturday , Knowing Playback Theatre performed a playback performance which topic is based upon the Human Rights in a semi-open Taipei Culture Center, Wen-Shan department. The audience were above 40, from child to the aged, part of them are the playbackers around Taiwan. In the opening we employed the music of “Power to the People”, the actors played the ball and talked about the social issues we cared in the world one by one. We used the form of Collage recap our stories in the end. From the story of the British child with heart disease, the introspection of the education system on Taiwan which was posed by a junior student who questioned the process of educational policy ignored the voiced of the student and the decision of the important public construction which should be involved with the people’s opinion but not, the theme of the performance encircled on the person, whether has the right to proclaim his own right or not.

Hopefully by this performance, we can lead the audience to notice the issues, which is still happening in the Taiwan, in the world. From these true stories of the reality, we hope provoke the authentic feeling of the audience rather than seeing a show. Under the music of Imaging, the actors passed the balloons, with the perspective of participant may bring the concern of the society, with throwing their own efforts to make the world better.

2. YOURS Playback Theatre (Jester Lee wrote)

In the morning of 6th Dec, 2008, YOURS playback theatre company perform the “Story of Freedom”, being seen by about 40 audience, composed mainly by community citizen, 3 volunteer of Judicial Reform Foundation and a mental disorder children. Through the discussion we inspired the probability of action between conservatives and future. In the afternoon of the same say, we also held a workshop of Human Right Education” and about 10 persons attended.

In the performance, we started by a human right game through which to encourage the interaction. Accordingly the actors shared about our own concerned issue in the past as the beginning. Gradually the audience began to mirror their own struggling, such as the how to educate the children, the personal story. It is also worthy to mention that some audience began to question the definition of the freedom.

After sharing some feeling and short stories, a middle age man shared the developmental relation between his father since he was a child. By the form of “Collage” we recaptured through the performance and tried to balance the different perspective as ending. In addition to that, we had a short forum right after the performance, in which the audience reflected each other’s story by sharing.

By the diverse feedbacks from the audience, we discovered that the audience started to introspect the past experience from which might come across to oppress the others accidentally. To sum up, the playback literally creates the space allowing people to watch the story, and evokes them to have further thinking.

3. Playback 999 Theatre

In the evening of 10th, Dec, 2008, we started from experience activity, the word cards which were written various human rights implications, such as unfairness, freedom, discrimination, justice and so on, were placed on the ground. Everyone selected the most impressive cards , and then shared their experience with people who got the same card. Following the sharing, they did improvisation of sculpture according to the word on the card, and let others to guess the meaning of the word.

When participants found that someone choose the same word cards, they realized that " I am not the only one who have this feeling". Even though people have different stories, but they may have the same feeling. That is the feeling that “there is somebody in the same boat”.

A teacher participant compensated for an injustice done to students, could not respect the colleagues with indedication attitude , do not agree that the colleagues over protect their own rights and neglect the learning right of students.

A Junior high School girl also complained that witnessed the boys in her class look down on discrimination against girls, but at other times she felt the sense of justice. It is worthy to be called a modern version of “a Swordswoman”.
After the performances, everyone's response is great and powerful to hear the voices of discontent at same time!
Holding the hand of partnership, tandem energy, arterial blood flow to each other is hot ... ...
Let justice luminous, so that freedom of the heart!

http://knowtheater.pixnet.net/blog

http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/lifestory-theatre/

Jester Lee: http://jesterlee.blogspot.com/search/label/

http://www.wretch.cc/blog/playback999
